Soil Jar Test
Find out what kind of soil you have! Healthy soil is roughly 20% clay, 40% silt, 40% sand. This test takes ~1 min to set up and 24 hours to complete.
Instructions:
- Fill a straight-sided jar (mason jar) ⅓–½ full with soil dug to root level (~6").
- Fill to the shoulder with water. Shake hard for 3 minutes.
- Set down. After 1 minute, measure sediment at bottom → that's sand.
- After 4 more minutes, measure again. The difference → silt.
- After 24 hours, measure once more. The difference → clay.
Amending Your Soil:
🏖️ Sandy soil (well-draining): Add humus, aged manure, peat moss, or sawdust + extra nitrogen.
🌫️ Silty soil (holds water): Add coarse sand (not beach sand) or gravel + compost, or well-rotted horse manure with straw.
🧱 Clay soil (hard to drain): Add coarse sand, compost, and peat moss.
Plants that like "wet feet" thrive in silty or clay soils. Choose accordingly, or amend first!
